Tribal

Tribal tattoos are the oldest form of tattooing without a doubt. In ancient times, tribal tattoo was used for a symbol of identity dealing a certain tribe. Other than that, it was used for expressing religion or spiritual belief. For some tribes, tattoos were used for self protection to camouflage their selves in the woods. However, tribal tattoos have been widely spread into many styles and only adapt the style of the origin tribes, then combine it to the modern images. Modern tribal art is just adapt the style from Aztec, Samoan, Polynesian, Indian, Hawaiian, Egyptian, Mayan, and Maori. These tribes use tattoo for identification, social status, and even medicinal purposes. Overall, the black tribal tattoo designs impress mythical and mysterious meaning. Although somehow the design can bring kind of ancient or mythical sense, but the community no longer judge someone by identifying the tattoos. Here are some tribal tattoos. Let's take a look.

Maori

The Maori tribe of New Zealand has deep roots to tattoos. It represented the inner strength. This was because Maori tribe believed that the time when someone dies, the light will shine directly through you and the tattoo would show who you are. They also held the belief that the face and the head were the most divine parts of a human body and thus tattooing the face or the head was considered honorable. Therefore, a person who has a Maori tribe tattoo, would wear it not just to symbolize inner strength but also to showcase his ancestral tribal lineage and associations.

India
The Indian tribe was called the Haida. They lived on the Northwest coast of America. The style of the tattoos are similar to the woodcarving of the Haida, like beavers, fish, thunder birds, bears, and so on. This was because they believed that if you have a certain tattoo, you partly take over the strength of that animal. Thus, Haida style is forceful and masculine. Mostly the picture is about the Indian astrology.

An Asian tattoo is considered a style in and of itself. And I would like to introduce two types of Asian tattoos. Even though I am Korean, I think that there are big two types of Asian tattoos-- Chinese and Japanese.

1) Chinese

Chinese Character tattoo

Chinese symbols tattoos have been very popular in the Western world the last decade still today. Chinese characters are beautiful little pieces of art, exotic and mysterious, and very suitable for Westerners. Ironically, these kinds of tattoos are only done by Westerners, you'll seldom see a Chinese with a character tattoo.  Here's an important advice that if you consider about getting a Chinese writing tattoo, make sure you get your translation from a reliable source so the design really means what you think it does. Also, make sure to select the tattoo artist who is able to reproduce the translation correctly. Find a tattoo artist who has had experience with Chinese character tattoos and can render the writing correctly.

Here are celebrities with a Chinese symbol tattoo.

David Beckham, famous English football player.

It says: 生死有命,富貴在天, which can be equal to that of Every bullet has its billet in English language.

NBA basketball player: Iverson(USA)

The tattoo of Chinese character “ 忠 ”(Pinyin: zhong) means that loyalty, one of view of value of Chinese nation over hundreds of thousands of years.

2) Japanese

Japanese tattoos are one of the most popular styles in tattoo art. Because Japanese tattoos has a meaning and purpose. This is the reason why the Japanese tattoo tradition has persisted for so long and has appealed to so many outside of Japanese culture.
There are a number of images and symbols used in the Japanese style to convey specific meanings. These images are used to convey a person’s beliefs, aspirations, or character traits. Called “motifs”, these design elements are intended to have the same meaning wherever they are used so that meaning is not unique to the individual. That means that anyone that sees the tattoo can instantly recognize the meaning and what they wearer wants to have conveyed, be it personality traits, character attributes, or association with a criminal organization.

Photorealistic

Realistic tattoos are a relatively recent phenomenon in tattooing for two reasons.
First, There are tattoo artists who are capable of creating tattoos that look like photographs on your skin. Second, As the equipment, pigments, and techniques of the tattoo art-form have advanced in recent years, it has become possible for skilled artists to create tattoos that are more realistic than ever. Realistic tattoos are often portraits, but wildlife is another common subject.
